چکیده
We summarize the content, discussions and conclusions of a workshop, “Research Opportunities with Ultracold Neutrons in the US”, held in Santa Fe, NM, on November 6th and 7th, 2009. The primary goal of this workshop was to elucidate physics opportunities for future work using the Los Alamos Ultracold Neutron Source. During the workshop, the physics motivation was reviewed for measurements of the neutron static electric dipole moment (EDM), neutron β-decay observables, neutron-antineutron (NNbar) oscillations, measurements using well-defined gravitational bound states, and surface physics. The workshop also reviewed the status and elements of the source development and research program at all major existing (ILL, LANL and Osaka) and planned (PSI, Munich, TRIUMF, PULSTAR) UCN sources. Primary conclusions drawn from the talks and discussion were, first, that the current UCN program covers a broad range of research in areas of interest to the nuclear physics community. Projects underway in the US to develop new UCN sources, UCN guide technology, fundamental nuclear and particle physics measurements and new surface science applications for UCN are unique and competitive components of the national and international fundamental neutron research program. Key points identified during the workshop include:

Constraints on spin-dependent short-range interactions using gravitational quantum levels of ultracold neutrons
In this paper, we discuss a possibility to improve constraints on spin-dependent short-range interactions in the range of 1 – 200μm significantly. For such interactions, our constraints are without competition at the moment. They were obtained through the observation of gravitationally bound states of ultracold neutrons. We are going to improve these constraints by about three orders of magnitu...
متن کاملFemale Suicide and Labor Markets: A Disaggregated Panel Analysis of the Link between Labor Market Conditions and Female Suicides in the United States (1979- 2004)
Suicide is a well-known public health problem in the United States. Macroeconomic conditions, among many other factors, because of their impacts on psychological well-being of individuals, are thought to be linked to suicide attempts. However, previous research on the relationship between suicide rates and macroeconomic conditions, especially that of labor market conditions, has resulted into a...
متن کاملObservation of the spatial distribution of gravitationally bound quantum states of ultracold neutrons and its derivation using the Wigner function.
Ultracold neutrons (UCNs) can be bound by the potential of terrestrial gravity and a reflecting mirror. The wave function of the bound state has characteristic modulations. We carried out an experiment to observe the vertical distribution of the UCNs above such a mirror at the Institut Laue-Langevin in 2011. The observed modulation is in good agreement with that prediction by quantum mechanics ...
متن کاملPublic Spending on Health Service and Policy Research in Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States: A Modest Proposal
Health services and policy research (HSPR) represent a multidisciplinary field which integrates knowledge from health economics, health policy, health technology assessment, epidemiology, political science among other fields, to evaluate decisions in health service delivery. Health service decisions are informed by evidence at the clinical, organizational, and policy level, levels with distinct...
متن کاملCold neutron energy dependent production of ultracold neutrons in solid deuterium.
A measurement of the production of ultracold neutrons from velocity-selected cold neutrons on gaseous and solid deuterium targets is reported. The expected energy dependence for two-particle collisions with well defined neutron and Maxwell-Boltzmann distributed molecular velocities is found for the gas target. The solid target data agree in shape with the phonon density-of-states curve and prov...
